"You have to sing from your diaphragm". I know many of us always hear this word said by other people but some doesn't have the idea on what it really means. It simply means that you have to make use of your diaphragm to control your breathing when you sing. So the question is, how can you do this? In order to perfect your singing breath, what you have to do is to rehearse with great vocal exercises. Much more like an intricate coordination between the muscle and breath, many music teachers find it hard to teach to their students the means of singing from the diaphragm by merely putting them to words. This is the reason why many are getting puzzled on this matter. In order for you to have the idea on how to use your diaphragm in singing, do this exercise of breathing. With a comfortable posture, stand in a straight manner and do a large yawn – like this aahhh! What can you notice? Yes, you can feel that your tummy is expanding outwards while doing the breathing exercise. And that is the answer to your question. The work of the diaphragm in singing is to press on your tummy in order for your lungs to move lower and store more air. Controlling the flow of air is also the function of the diaphragm. It allows the accurate amount of air to flow to the vocal cords. A small amount of air is needed by the vocal cords when high notes are being tackled. The quality of your voice will be calm and stable when the right amount of air is sent to the vocal cords. This will make your over all performance great. In order to achieved the proper way to sing from your diaphragm, you have to practice constantly until it all becomes a part of your habit – in which it will just naturally occur to you to sing using your diaphragm everytime you perform. By getting used to this singing method, you will no longer worry about the correct amount of air to be sent to your diaphragm because it will just naturally happen. You don't have to do the breathing exercises for singing in order to toughen your diaphragm just like in what most would normally do. Just the way as it was created, your diaphragm is naturally strong already. Not much support is needed by the vocal cords since they are delicate and small. The vocal breathing exercises in this manner cannot be shown since this is just an article. But by doing this exercise that I will be giving you, you will be able to get a feel of it. So here it goes: On your tummy, put the palm of your hands calmly. Then, you have to breathe deep and long. Extend your tummy sideways and outward as the air goes in when you are breathing in. After which you have to breathe out by pursing your lips simultaneously to let loose of the controlled flow of air. You will notice that as air is being let loose, your tummy is becoming small and it goes back to its normal form. This is just how it is to sing from your diaphragm.
