Also, you want to make sure that you get familiar with the lingo and culture. Learn all you can so that you're just as well-versed in this world as those who are already working in it.
What else? Once you get familiar with companies out there making a difference, it's a good idea to begin making contact with the decision makers to see how you can fit into their mold. You can look for the Board of Directors, C-suite company leadership, and even news and press releases to conduct your research.
