Pursuing a career as an electrician is a great choice since there is a lot of scope to grow in this field. Electricity is something that is used in each and every aspect of our lives. We cannot even imagine life without electricity. Electricity is not limited to providing light alone, it also enables us to live a life of ease and comfort. We need power to run our air conditioners, to keep food from spoiling in our refrigerators and to cook. Power is needed to run industries too. You simply cannot wake up one day and decide to become an electrician. You need to have the aptitude for this work. If you have a liking for math, science and love to work with electricity in your school shop training, you definitely will do well pursuing this as your career. You can also opt for the aptitude tests conducted by your school to find out if you are suited to become an electrician. Beside your technological interest and talent, you also need to be dexterous and possess excellent hand and eye coordination. The four steps that you need to take in order to begin your career as an electrician are: 1. Search for a school: Your race begins with finding a school where you can learn the ins and outs of becoming an electrician. Trust me; there is no dearth of such schools. However, you need to find out the right one for you. There are many online courses available. You need to exercise caution here since you may get stuck with a bad online course. If you want to take up an online course, you must research it well and pick a program of study that is associated or supported by famous institutes. You need to understand that becoming an electrician is not very easy and that it does take time and effort. A typical course can be approximately four years long, and you need to attend theory classes, which can take up to 144 hrs and practical application, which may take 2000 hrs. 2. Attend a specialized course: The two areas in which you can get specialization are in maintenance and in construction. You can choose any area of your interest but these days competition has gone up to such an extent that it is advisable to learn and get specialization in both the areas. 3. Acquire a certificate: Just like in other careers, certification is an added advantage for electricians too. Most employers and contractors prefer certified electricians. You need to take a precise test that will check your awareness of code, theory and general technical familiarity. 4. Keep Studying: Yes, you read it right. You need to continue learning even after you get your certification. It is impossible to learn everything you need to know about becoming an electrician just by attending a single course. The field is continuously evolving and you need to keep learning all that you can, so that you can keep abreast of the new developments in the field.
