Moving can be a very interesting endeavor but it is all about change. That is why it can be very stressful for children. Taking the time to help them to prepare for it is a great way to ensure it goes as smooth as possible. How you can do that depends on the age of the children. Don't underestimate the attachment that even very young individuals have to their environment.
For very young children that can't fully understand the situation, make sure they get things that are familiar to them. Allow them to keep their favorite toys out until you are ready to take the last of the items from the home. You want them to be able to have those items with them at the new location too. That way they feel safe and comfortable.
Older children can help with packing and getting a home ready to move out of. They should be included in those efforts. It will help them to have some closure on the place they live now. If you are moving close by, allow them to come see the new home with you. That way they can have a say in what will be done to make it your own.
Older children should be included in the decision of a move whenever possible. Of course the adults have the final say. Your children will appreciate that their input was considered though. If you are going to move locally, it can be fun to take them with you to see potential homes. You do want them to feel very comfortable when they move into a new place. They may become very excited about the move when they are involved on many levels of the process.
Allow your children time for the changes to process on their end. They may be sad with the idea of moving one day. Then they next they are very happy about it. Focus their attention on the positive reasons for moving though. That way they will be able to find those good moments on their own more and more.
If you want to make sure your children are well prepared for a move, make them as much of a part of the experience as you can. Take the time to answer any questions they may have about it. The more you can do to relieve their anxiety the better. There are many reasons why people have to move so be open with that as well.
Your child may be very resistant to the move until they understand the reasons why. For example if you must relocate for work, they may be very upset about leaving friends behind. As you explain that you need to be able to work to take care of the family though they should become more understanding of what is going to occur as well as why it needs to happen.
Tell your children as soon as you can about a move. That way they have time to adjust for it. For example if you are going to place your home on the market and then move let them know what that plan of action is going to be. Explain to them that there is no set time frame for a home to sell.
Moving can be hard on the entire family so make sure all of you have a chance to evaluate the situation. Children are often afraid of the unknown. Do all you can to assure them they are loved and their needs will be met. Sometimes all they need is to know that everything is going to work out.
