If you are considering using a web host for your site then before you just run off and slap a site on the first site you see there are some basic things that you need to consider. First it is vital that you know the language, this will help a great deal as you progress forward into the world of web hosting. No person can just wander into web hosting and just hope that everything will be just fine and dandy. In this article I will show and explain to you the key things that you need to know in order to have a successful trip into web hosting.

First lets start with the basics, what is a web host? in simple terms a web host is the computer that your site is hosted on. This super-computer needs to be of better quality than your run of the mill pc you buy at Best Buy. The reason for this is because the server will have to be able to handle several websites being hosted at the same time. Your website is stored on this computer and therefore your site is seen by millions of people around the world. Web host can be in the form of several types based upon your financial requirements and website storage space needed.
1. Free Hosts:
If you are not one of those typical computer geek guys and are just looking to host your site for fun, then a free web host is probably the best option for your needs. There are a couple of drawbacks to this type of hosting though. First the amount of space available and bandwidth are limited, this will hurt you if you are looking to get the word out to the masses. Also the level of customer service is limited as there is not as much support on the free host as there is with other paid host. The last disadvantage is that on your domain name the words free host usually get added which will give your site a less than glamorous image.
2. Shared Hosts:
The next type of service is called shared hosting. This means that your site is sharing space with a number of other sites, the price for this service ranges from $1-$25 and the features range from limited bandwidth and space to those of a semi dedicated server. The drawback to this is that the more sites that are hosted on the server the less reliable the performance will be.
3. Dedicated Hosts:
If you are looking to run a moderately big business then you will want to have a dedicated server. This type of hosting is the best bet for the money that you will be spending. With this type of hosting the name speaks for itself as your site is hosted on a dedicated server. This is the type of hosting you would be looking for if you expect thousands of people to visit your site daily. Customers can run their own hosting company on a rented dedicated server. These dedicated servers range in price from $100 all the way to $800 depending on the services that you want to include.
