Everyone is concerned about jobs in these economic times. This concern does not have to turn into a disabling fear. Instead, it should become a motivating challenge for anyone who wants to better their chances of success. The future will always be uncertain, no matter how strong or weak the economy is. Thus, every worker, whether currently in a secure job or looking for a new opportunity, should always consider their options and possibilities with an open mind and a positive attitude. The traditional secure office job, like the stable factory job, may be a thing of the past. Workers need to have options that make them feel hopeful about the future. When times change, attitudes can change with them. This may seem frightening at first. But it will be strengthening in the long term. Any employee who readies himself for bumpy roads ahead will make his current job that much more stable. Every employee, at any stage in their career, will benefit themselves by being aware of the opportunities now considered unconventional. Certain career fields have passed through the oddity phase, well into the edgy-smart phase, and are now firmly accepted as mainstream job options. Part time, freelance, and work-from-home are all phrases that fit into this category. Part time work can include everything from working at your favorite fast-food place to stacking books at your local library. There is no shame in taking a low paying job as a second income, especially when the position is open to advancement. Management might be only a few years away, and your investment of time and energy could make just the connections you need to get ahead. If there is a possibility that you can work your way up from part-time laborer to assistant manager to full time leader, you are smart to consider an entry level or part time position. And remember that along the way, you are building a network of contacts. Your coworkers, and even your supervisors, are possible future employees of yours.
Build trust, earn respect, and you will eventually cash in. Freelance opportunities are huge in certain industries, and the more connections you have, the easier it will be for you to break into the business of your dreams. Thus, starting out in a part time position fits hand and glove with the freelance spirit. You can put your special communication skills to work at writing newsletters for the local homeless shelter, or you can show off your best photography at a nearby senior center. Initially you cannot count on a huge income with freelance jobs. But as you build up a reputation, you can expect that more organizations will notice and request your work. Working from home is another job option that is now considered mainstream. It used to sound lame and lazy, but now everyone wishes they could work from home, if only it came with insurance benefits. That economic disadvantage is almost equally balanced by the choice and freedom offered by a home based job. Anyone can put their best talents to work in a home office. On-line is the place to start, and like the freelance options, the more connections you have established up front, the better. Work from home possibilities can even branch out, depending on how mobile you want to be. From catering small parties, to cleaning neighbors' houses, if you have your own personal equipment, and a lot of enthusiasm for the work, you're ready to get started right out of your own kitchen or closet.
