When the Adopting-Moment arises in any of the foregoing conditions, one departs from the Formed-Symbols (Sankhara-Nimitta), which is the same as quelling the Aggregates (Upadhi-Viveka). At the moment when the Path arises, one departs from one's past record, which is one's Tendency of Craving. 5. After this, the Fruition-(Phala) Citta arises for two or three moments, depending on the ability and attainment of the person concerned. If of Sluggish Intuition (Dandhabhinna), the Fruition-Cilia arises for two moments; and if of Quick Intuition (Khippabhinna), for three moments. Then, the Citta falls to the Stream of the Passive-State. 6. Concerning the Absorption-of-Mind-Process (Managgatappana-Javana) in which one attains Mundane (Lokiya) Jhana. This is different from the Path-Process in that the Apperception Moments of a) Preparation, b) Approaching, and c) Adapting, do not overcome the Defilements and it is only able to attain one moment of the Citta of Jhana which arises from the Passive state (Bhavangup-pati). The Citta then falls to the Passive State and does not attain Insight-Wisdom (Vipassana). Because of this, it is Mundane Jhana. One who attains this state, only gains Detachment of the Citta (Citta-Viveka). The process of developing calm, only overcomes the Hindrances (Nivarana) at the Adopting-Moment (Gotrabhu) of the Mundane Jhana process, which then goes beyond the Citta-of- the-Sensual -Realm and attains the Citta-of-the-Form -Realm. One who attains this state keeps to objects in the present, but cannot get free from the Aggregates. With regard to the aforementioned Transcendental-Process; when one enters Jhana one should investigate the factors of Jhana and the Dhamma-Qualities which are connected to them. In other words, the factors which include Pleasure-of-Body-and-Heart (Piti).Happiness-of-Body-and-Heart (Sukha), and Unification-of-the Citta (Ekaggata), are found to be Unsatisfactory (Dukkha ), Impermanent (Anicca), and Non-Self (Anatta). The Path then overcomes and destroys the Defilements, because these Three Marks (Ti-Lakkhanฺa) are what stop the Stream of Becoming, and also cause one to get free by way of the Path-Citta. This is the way in which the Transcendental-Process differs from the Mun-dane-Process. ATTAINING THE FORMLESS REALM One who has already developed the Form Jhanas and wishes to develop the Formless Jhanas,1 should avoid the use of the nine Concentration-Devices (Kasina) and should fix his attention on Space. Concentrating on empty space, is the object; and with the preparatory (Parikamma) words, "Space is Boundless", the person doing the practice (Yogavacara), undaunted, enters the First Formless Jhana. When he leaves the realm of Boundless-Space and wishes to attain Consciousness (Vinnanฺa) as the object; then with the preparatory words, ‘Consciousness is Boundless", undaunted, he enters the second Formless Jhana. Leaving the realm of Boundless-Consciousness, he turns to an object which is "Not-Consciousness", and repeating "Nothing is", undaunted, he enters the third Formless Jhana. Leaving the Consciousness of No-Thing, he then attains a subtle object and repeating, "This is not Consciousness, nor is it No-Consciousness", undaunted, heenters the fourth Formless Jhana. The Form and Formless States-of-Mind are Heavy Kamma. This is the type of kamma which is stronger than all others and which gives rise to it's results before them all.
