This parsha really sort of begins at the conclusion of Parashat Vayelech with a rather depressing prediction in Deuteronomy 31:14-17 God summons Moshe and Yehoshua (Joshua) to the "ohel mo'ed" (Tabernacle), to inform them that Yehoshua can expect the worst:
