As far back as I can remember, growing up in Ohio left many good memories and very few bad ones, My parents were the average middle class type of parents. My father working on the railroad and my mother being a stay at home mom. In the beginning we lived with my grandmother in a multi-racial neighborhood. I didn't know the difference between races and played with them all. Eventually this changed but more on that later, much later.
My father eventually saved enough money to rent a place of our own. We rented a home in a nice neighborhood that had trees every where and a park where I spent a good time of my life at. I called it a park but to me it was a giant forest that had a river running thru it and a large lake that i fished in many times over. This was a great time in my life as I did most of my growing up here in this area.
I joined the cub scouts when I was old enough and learned how to tie different knots, make musical instruments and go camping overnight in the woods with my den. My dog and I would go fishing in the lake that I mentioned earlier and my dog would somehow find my bait and eat it. My fishing became somewhat limited at times due to the darn dog. Soon I was able to become proficient in catching water snakes. They would climb the bushes alongside the rivers and ponds to sun the selves. Quietly I would sneak up on them and grab them behind the head before they able to drop back into the water. I took one home in a bag one time to show my mother but she almost broke the windows from screaming so loud. As you can guess the snake catching ceased very quickly.
During the winter we would come down at night and go ice skating on the lake. The lake was marked where the ice was too thin and we had a bon fire going in a 50 gallon drum to keep us warm. The snow in Ohio can be very heavy sometimes and too deep to even walk in as I was not that tall at the time. I remember trying to walk to school one day when the snow was up to my hip. I don't think I ever did make it that day.
My dad never did have a car when we lived there as the bus system was the only transportation that we could afford. I often wondered how my dad managed to get thru all of the winters that we lived there. Some how we made it. We didn't leave Ohio until I was sixteen and moved to California. This was a tough transition for me as the area was totally different from Ohio. There were no rivers or lakes to fish in. The up side was no snow in the winter and my dad finally bought a car.
